A year in the life of a roaming band

Kyle Chater of Kyle Chater Acoustic, and guitarist and band manager of The Snap Chaps – Cambridge’s very own acoustic roaming band – takes us behind the scenes to show us just how far a roaming band can roam!

From hospital corridors and historic sporting grounds to grand business school celebrations, racecourses, wedding venues and football stadiums, our year as a roaming band has taken us to some truly special places.

Our summer began close to home at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, where we were delighted to perform at two events in July. One was the University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine’s 50th anniversary celebration. Having returned for several summers now to entertain NHS staff, it is always a privilege to be invited back and to bring a little music and joy to those who do so much for others.

There have been some wonderful occasions elsewhere in the Cambridge area too. In the spring, we had the pleasure of performing at the Cambridge Judge Business School May Ball, before heading to Newmarket Racecourses in October. December will see us return to Tattersalls in Newmarket for the fifth consecutive year, providing the musical entertainment for the Gredley Charitable Trust’s Christmas lunches.

Our travels have also taken us further afield. We are now into our sixth season at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where we have become a familiar feature at home matches, entertaining guests in the premium hospitality areas. We have also enjoyed performing at events at the club’s training ground. Along the way, we have had the honour of working alongside some true Spurs legends, including Glenn Hoddle, David Pleat and Ossie Ardiles.

Another particularly memorable destination this summer was Rugby School, where we were thrilled to be invited to perform twice. There is something rather special about playing on the very fields where the game of rugby is said to have been invented!

Of course, some of our most treasured performances take place at weddings. Throughout the year, we travel across East Anglia and beyond, helping couples celebrate their special day with lively, daytime entertainment. Whether it is a drinks reception, a garden party or the early evening celebrations, we love creating an interactive atmosphere that brings guests together. We are especially grateful to every couple who chooses us to be part of their wedding.

We are also delighted to have received a Hitched Wedding Award for the third year running, recognising us as one of the most valued and recommended wedding suppliers by couples using the website. It is a wonderful endorsement and means a great deal to us.

And the year doesn't stop there! This winter, we will be bringing the music to Folk Suffolk, the café and restaurant in Bury St Edmunds, for their Folk Festive Party on Saturday 28 November. Our 12 December evening has already sold out, so if your team is looking for a Christmas night out, do join us on the 28th, you can book at folksuffolk.com

From hospitals to stadiums, schools to racecourses, wedding celebrations to Christmas parties, we are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to perform in so many wonderful places across the UK. We would also like to thank every venue that has welcomed us, particularly those across Cambridge and the surrounding area who recommend us and include us in their entertainment supplier listings.

Most importantly, none of these adventures would be possible without the people who follow us, recommend us, book us and come along to enjoy the music. Wherever the next performance takes us, we look forward to making many more memories along the way – thank you for being part of our journey!
